Cuban Cake Recipe Homemade
You may find different variants of Cuban Cake recipe, but the cake is about a moist, aromatic, and tasty dessert. After all, most Caribbean desserts are popular for their tropical ingredients, tasty vibe, and bold flavors.
Cuban Cake Recipe: The Specialty
Whereas most people think that Cuban cake is similar to the spongy ones commonly baked for birthdays, this one is slightly different. It’s basically a Cuban rum cake that has a unique and distinctive flavor, thanks to the rum. Not to mention that it’s also rich and buttery. With the (rum) syrup, you will feel the caramelized warmth within every bite.
Another reason why the cake is so special is because of the texture and the rum. When layered together with vanilla, molasses, and caramel, it creates not only tasty, but bold and unique taste. Of course, you can always substitute the rum with other ingredients, but the rum syrup allows slow penetration to the cake, making the crumbs velvety and fresh for many days to come. But if you want to replace the rum, you can try fruit juice, like pineapple juice or apple juice. But keep in mind that different types of juice will lead to different results and taste.
The Ingredients
The Cake
• You need all purpose flour – 2 cups
• Granulated sugar – 1 ½ cups
• Unsalted butter that has been softened – 1 cup
• Big eggs – four of them
• Whole milk – ½ cup
• Salt – a pinch
• Lime or orange zest – 1
• Aged or dark rum – ½ cup
• Baking powder – 2 teaspoons
• Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
• Ground nutmeg – ½ teaspoon
• Cinnamon – ½ teaspoon
The Rum Syrup
• Water – ½ cup
• Unsalted butter – ½ cup
• Sugar – 1 cup
• Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
• Dark rum – ½ cup
How to Make the Cake
• You want to preheat the oven up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 175 degrees Celsius.
• Prepare a loaf pan or a bundt by greasing and flouring it.
• Mix sugar and the softened butter until it’s fluffy and light. It takes only 3 to 4 minutes. It will make the cake firm and yet tender.
• Add the eggs but do it one at a time. Mix each one thoroughly before you add the next one.
• Add the citrus zest and vanilla extract.
• In another bowl, mix up flour, nutmeg, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. This will be your dry mixture
• Add the dry mixture to the butter mix. Do it in stages while alternating it with the milk. Stir just enough to combine it.
• Add the rum.
• Pour the batter into the pan.
• Let it bake for around 45 to 55 minutes. To check, you can insert a toothpick into the cake. Do it on the center. If nothing is stuck on it, it means that your cake is well-baked.
• In another bowl (or preferably a small saucepan), you need to melt sugar, butter, and water. Let it simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from stove and then add vanilla and rum.
• When the cake is still nice and warm, you need to use a skewer to poke holes throughout the cake. Pour the syrup over it so the cake will absorb it completely.
• Let the cake rest and fully cooled.
